Bellingham Castle Wedding - Romantic Irish Castle Venue

When Giselle and Paul began planning their wedding, they knew they wanted something truly special — a destination wedding that felt intimate, meaningful, and uniquely Irish. Travelling from the United States, they chose Bellingham Castle, a stunning 17th-century castle set along the River Glyde in County Louth, for their celebration. The entire castle and its grounds are yours for the day, creating a seamless flow from the morning preparations to the late-night party. I had the pleasure of photographing their day after being recommended by Conor and Aideen, whose wedding at Markree Castle I photographed previously. Personal recommendations like this are always incredibly special, and it’s wonderful to see couples trust friends’ experience when choosing their wedding photographer in Ireland.

A Romantic Destination – 17th-century castle

After the ceremony, we took a short walk around the castle grounds for portraits. One of the advantages of Bellingham Castle is how quickly you can move between locations while keeping the couple relaxed and present with their guests. The soft Irish light and historic surroundings allowed us to create a mix of natural reportage moments and artistic portraits — images that feel both timeless and personal. As evening arrived, the castle transformed into a warm and intimate setting for dinner and speeches. Candlelight, laughter, and emotional toasts created an atmosphere that perfectly reflected Giselle and Paul’s vision for their wedding — elegant, relaxed, and focused on celebrating with the people closest to them.

Planning a Bellingham Castle Wedding

For couples considering a destination wedding in Ireland, Bellingham Castle offers a beautiful balance of history, comfort, and exclusivity. Its layout works especially well for couples who want a seamless wedding day without long travel times between locations.

Morning Preparations

The day usually starts in the grand guest bedrooms or the opulent Lord Bellew Suite. These rooms feature high ceilings, antique furniture, and massive windows that overlook the river and gardens. The light here is soft and elegant, making it a perfect spot for those first wedding photos as you get ready.

The Ceremony

You have two main choices for the “I dos.” Many couples choose the Walled Garden for an outdoor ceremony; it is a private, manicured space with a romantic stone gazebo. If you prefer to be indoors, the castle’s internal reception rooms offer a warm atmosphere with open log fires and historic portraits, which is especially cozy for winter weddings.

The Drinks Reception

After the ceremony, guests move into the Castle Reception Rooms and the Library Bar. This area feels like a grand private home, filled with deep sofas and hidden nooks. If the weather is nice, the party spills out onto the Veranda and the lawns, which sit right beside the River Glyde flowing through the estate

The Wedding Feast

The main dinner is held in the Bellow Suite. This is a magnificent ballroom with ornate ceilings and grand chandeliers. It manages to feel both grand and intimate, with large windows that keep the space connected to the gardens outside as the sun sets.

The Surroundings and Photography

For photos, the estate is a dream. The stone bridge over the river is a classic spot for portraits, as is the rustic boathouse by the water. The long, sweeping driveway and the castle’s stone exterior provide that iconic “fairytale” backdrop that defines a Bellingham wedding.

The Night Celebration

As the evening goes on, the Bellow Suite turns into a dance floor. One of the best parts is that because you have exclusive use, the party feels like a private house celebration. The Library Bar stays open late for residents, allowing the celebration to continue long after the main music stops.

FAQ

How do we choose the right photographer?

Look for someone experienced with castle venues and changing Irish light conditions. A photographer who understands the layout of the grounds, indoor portrait options, and reception flow will help keep the day relaxed while delivering natural images.

Is the venue suitable for natural, unposed wedding photography?

Yes. The venue’s private grounds and elegant interiors provide beautiful backdrops for documentary-style photography. Couples can enjoy relaxed portraits while still keeping most of the day candid and focused on real moments.

Do destination couples need a photographer familiar with Irish weather?

Absolutely. Irish weather can change quickly, and having a photographer experienced with local conditions ensures beautiful images regardless of light or weather changes. Indoor portrait locations at  Castle also provide elegant alternatives if needed.

How much time should we allow for portraits ?

Typically, 20–30 minutes is enough for relaxed portraits around the castle grounds. Because everything is close together, couples can return quickly to their drinks reception without feeling like they are away from guests for long.

Do you photograph other castle weddings in Ireland?

Yes, I regularly photograph castle weddings in historic Irish venues, including Markree Castle and other exclusive castle estates. Many couples book through personal recommendations from previous weddings, which allows me to bring experience and familiarity to each new celebration.
